11-year-old girl who ran away returns home

Jade Davis left her Lane Avenue apartment Sunday night after fight with mom

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Police say an 11-year-old girl who apparently took off from her apartment on Lane Avenue Sunday night after getting into an argument with her mother returned home the next afternoon and is safe.

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said Jade Davis was reported missing 9 p.m. from the Canterbury Gardens Apartments at 1591 Lane Ave.

Police said the girl was angry that her mother took away her cellphone and destroyed it after finding sexually explicit texts. A few hours later, the mother said Jade was gone.

Jade's mother, Vernita Fountain, said her daughter had run away from home once before, but this time thought the girl took after afer she was disciplined over the text messages.

A neighbor told officers she saw the girl leave the back door of her apartment and run east. A search of the area  by officers and K-9 teams showed no sign of her.

"Nobody bothered to come knock on my door and say, 'I just saw your 11-year-old run through a path with an overnight bag," Fountain said. "I was right there and she just snuck away."

At 4 p.m. Monday, @JSOPIO tweeted "Repeated runaway child ... has returned home and is fine."
