Police: Woman fails to get medical care for baby burned by iron

Shawnae Dantzler, 21, arrested child neglect charge

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A woman was arrested Tuesday after she failed to get medical care for an infant girl who suffered burns from a clothing iron, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said.

Shawnae Dantzler, 21, is charged with child neglect.

Police said they were called Tuesday to St. Vincent's Medical Center Riverside by an investigator with the Department of Children and Families. It's unclear who contacted DCF because the police report has been redacted.

Dantzler told officers she knew her daughter had burns on Thursday, but admitted to not getting medical care for the child, according to her arrest report.

Dantzler's mother, who wished to remain anonymous, told News4Jax that her 11-month-old granddaughter's second-degree burns were the result of an honest mistake.

The baby's grandmother said a clothing iron was accidentally left on inside her home Wednesday and it somehow burned her granddaughter's foot and thigh areas, which caused the injuries.

According to the grandmother, when Dantlzer learned her child was burned, she began treating the injuries with an aloe vera plant and applied ointments to the burns.

The little girl was placed in the custody of her father.

Dantzler was booked into the Duval County Jail and ordered held on $10,000 bond.
