Shad Khan: Super Bowl not a good use of Jacksonville's resources

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Jaguars owner Shad Khan has gone on the record to say he doesn't think it's a good idea for Jacksonville to host another Super Bowl.

Khan reportedly made the comments in an interview with The Jacksonville Business Journal when asked about whether he could see the city hosting the annual NFL championship game again.

"It didn't cross my mind, and I think this is a world where we have a finite amount of time, money and energy," said Khan. "I don't think it's a good use of Jacksonville's resources."

Channel 4 spoke with some Jaguars fans who disagreed with Khan.

"It brought in a lot of business, a lot of money, good for the people," said one fan.

"I think we need another one to build Jacksonville back up," said another.

"I think the more people we can get to know about this pretty city and see it on television, the better," said a third.

Still, Khan's statement wasn't as much about whether it would be good for the city, but about Jacksonville's resources.

Channel 4 Sports Director Sam Kouvaris said there is a resource issue that needs to be addressed if the Super Bowl were to return.

"If you really break it down from what Jacksonville needs to have another Super Bowl, it comes down to: We need another luxury hotel, we need better transportation," Kouvaris said. "The league made a lot of money here hosting the Super Bowl. They'd make a lot of money if they came back, and I don't think Shad would object to it."

Bidding on the big game would not just involve Khan, but also the city.

"You would never bid on a Super Bowl without consent and the help of your owner, and certainly Shad, as a very significant owner in that group, he has a big say in it, absolutely," Kouvaris said. "Now, it would take civic leaders convincing Shad it's the right thing to do to make that thing go forward."
