Super Bowl Sunday is biggest day for pizza sales

Pizza makers hoping to tackle business, expecting saucy revenues in return

JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA – Super Bowl Sunday is one of the biggest days for football fans but it's also the biggest day for pizza sales nationwide.

"Pizza makers have been prepping for today for more than a week now" said Jeff Blackwell who is the owner of Papa Murphys pizza near the intersection of JTB and Hodges.

Americans will spend more than 50 million dollars in food leading up to the Superbowl and a lot of that money will be spent on pizza. So whether it's the San Francisco 49's or the Baltimore Ravens who win, it's the pizza makers coming out on top.

More than 7 million slices of pepperoni . And more than 119 tons of shredded mozzarella cheese  are just a few of the Superbowl Pizza statistics released by Papa Murphy's pizza as they tackle Superbowl Sunday.

"We got our orders in earlier this week of pepperoni and dough on Monday, twice the amount of pepperoni. And we also received twice the amount of produce. We had a delivery yesterday with extra tomatoes and mushrooms because we don't want run out." said Jeff Blackwell.

Pizza makers throughout the city hope to double or even triple pizza sales today. In fact pizza makers across the city, say it's their number one day to cash in.

"It's either pizza or wings, pizza or wings and your beverage of choice" said Jeff Blackwell.

More than half of America will watch the Superbowl with family and friends. And when the game gets close the cash registers ring more. Pizza sales are said to skyrocket, when the game is neck and neck.

"I agree people are in a better mood, they order more pizza and have them stocked up in the freezer" said customer Natarah Lee.

Superbowl Sunday is the top pizza sales day followed by New Years Eve, Halloween and the day before Thanksgiving

" I see why, because its good with beer, or wine" said pizza lover Pat Domroese.

Pizza has become an American tradition that's synonymous with sports.

" I think sports is associated with food because your all together with your friends, we don't care about the game, just pizza and friends" said pizza lover Stephanie Glider.
