5 Points attack highlights safety concerns in Riverside

Surveillance video captures attack on musician outside Park Street bar

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – After an attack on a musician in the 5 Points area of Riverside was caught on surveillance video, some residents have raised concerns about safety throughout the neighborhood.

By day, Riverside is quiet and quaint. But even in the daylight, a close look exposes signs of the vibrant nightlife in the thriving neighborhood.

Lindsay May Dolphin, a manager at Kickbacks on King Street, said there's no question that the crowd throughout Riverside changes from day to night.

"It's a completely different atmosphere. During the day, it's, like, laid-back. Everybody's just chilling. Everybody's just hanging out. Then at night, it's a party scene. There's people all over the place, running around," she said.

Dolphin told News4Jax on Monday that she believes the change is due to alcohol.

"I've seen people projectile vomit off this patio. I've seen fights, all sorts of things. One time, I saw a car flip over right there in that median. Almost hit all of the cars parked right here. It was inches away," Dolphin said.

Matthew Johnson works as a barber at Razor's Edge, which is located across the street from Kickbacks. He said while he sees a more lively crowd after dark, he's never seen anything to be concerned about.

"The nighttime crowd is a little different by the fact that it consists more, I guess, of what you'd say rambunctious partygoers," Johnson said.

Last week, News4Jax obtained surveillance footage from outside a bar in 5 Points, an area in Riverside that's one of Jacksonville's most popular entertainment districts. The video shows a local musician suddenly being attacked on April 1 by three men, who the musician says were bouncers at area bars.

"You always have to be on alert for the other element, like, the not so good, godly element," Johnson said. "Because it's liquor. It's alcohol. And then you  don't know what they've got going on."

Despite the increasingly large crowds on both King Street and 5 Points, most of the people who News4Jax spoke with said they still feel safe.

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office crime map shows 11 assaults within a half-mile of the area since the beginning of the year.

City Councilman Jim Love, who represents Riverside, told News4Jax that if anything, crime is going down in the area.

"What I see is a lot of good, honest, hard-working people. And they pretty much, from what I hear when I talk to them and have a conversation, they pretty much got their life on track. They've got their job careers on track," Johnson said.

Johnson and others said they hope it stays that way -- at least for now.
