Tire separation to blame for fatal crash

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Florida Highway Patrol says the right rear tire on a car headed north on Interstate 295 just north of J. Turner Butler Boulevard early Sunday morning blew out, causing the driver to lose control of the car.

The Nissan Altima traveled across both northbound lanes, before striking the guardrail about 1:10 a.m.. The FHP report said the car came to a stop after crossing both northbound lanes.

Passenger Diane Cassidy, 21, of Windermere, Fla., who was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, and was ejected from the car. She died was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the car, 23-year-old Hau Nguyen of Jacksonville, was wearing a seat belt and was not injured.

The accident remains under investigation and a blood-alcohol test was conducted, which is routine.
