JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The vehicle sought by the Florida Highway Patrol in connection with the hit-and-run death of a Jacksonville woman was located Wednesday, authorities said.
Rebecca Ann Gomez, 33, was struck and killed while walking to a convenience store Monday night on Normandy Boulevard, near Herlong Airport on the city's Westside, according to FHP.
Investigators said her body wasn't found until about 6:45 a.m. Tuesday. Her death is being investigated as a possible hit-and-run of a pedestrian.
Troopers said they were looking for a 1994-1998 Chevrolet Suburban or Chevrolet Tahoe, possibly yellow, that was in the area about 11 p.m. Monday.
The next day, FHP found a yellow 1990 Chevy at the home of a relative of the owner on the Westside.
The owner of the truck is cooperating, trooper said.
Investigators will analyze forensic evidence to determine who was driving the truck at the time Gomez was killed, FHP said.
Daniel Johnson, Gomez's boyfriend, told News4Jax he never realized her life would be taken so close to home.
"They took someone very special to me and basically I can't find anyone like that again because I've know her since high school," Johnson said. "I was a little bit happy because at least they found him if he did it. If that's actually the person that they're looking for at least she can rest in peace."
Johnson said he has a lot of questions for the suspect and wants to make sure his girlfriend gets the justice she deserves.
"What they was doing while they were sitting there doing that, like a 50 mph zone when supposedly, from what FHP was saying, they were doing about 65 (mph)," Johnson said. "I think since (the driver) took a life, they should sit there and do the same thing. Put (the driver) in prison for life or put them on that tomorrow. That's just the way I see it."
Gomez is the sixth person killed in a hit-and-run crash in Jacksonville so far this year.
