More than 400 participating Cellular Connection stores across the county are inviting local families to bring their children to the store between noon and 3 p.m. Saturday to pick up a backpack.  In Jacksonville, the store is in the Bartram Park Publix shopping center off Old St. Augustine Road.  Backpacks and supplies will be given to children on a first come, first serve basis.

Each participating store will donate between 100 and 150 backpacks. Any leftover backpacks will be donated to local schools.

Jacksonville residents have also joined the cause. Since the beginning of May, Verizon customers have been given the option to round their purchases up to the nearest dollar with the difference going directly toward the School Rocks Backpack Giveaway.

According to the National Retail Federation, the average parent with children in grades K-12 will spend $95.44 on school supplies such as notebooks, pencils and backpacks.
