Vulture escapes from Jacksonville Zoo

Bird last seen flying away from North Jacksonville Baptist Church

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens needs the public's help after one of its vultures escaped.

Zoo officials said Hodari, a male white-backed African vulture, flew out of its habitat Thursday morning when a restrictive band broke off one of its wings.

Employees tracked Hodari to a tree but were unable to catch him. Hodari was last seen flying north away from North Jacksonville Baptist Church.

Anyone who spots Hodari is asked to email

The zoo said while the bird is not aggressive and does not pose a threat to people or other animals, it should not be approached.

Hodari came to the Jacksonville Zoo from Pittsburgh in 2006.
