JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Friends, family and complete strangers will gather Saturday at the Jacksonville Landing to celebrate Jordan Davis on what would have been his 18th birthday.

Mayor Alvin Brown has proclaimed Feb. 16 as Jordan Davis Day.

Davis was shot and killed at a Southside gas station late last year after getting into a dispute over loud music.

Local leaders and nearly 20 hip hop artists will be at the event organized by Ron Davis, Jordan's father.

It will cap off a busy week for Davis that began Sunday in Miami at a similar event put on by Trayvon Martin's family.

That was the first meeting face to face by the parents of the two teens who were killed by gun violence last year.

"We have talked on the phone and texted along the way since this happened to Jordan," Davis said. "It was an amazing room, an amazing crowd. Jamie Foxx was there, Cedric the Entertainer. They were there not as celebrities, but letting everyone know that Hollywood is behind us. Not just sending us a check, but they care."

The event honoring Davis is open to the public. It's set for 1-5 p.m.
