JSO: 18-month-old found in retention pond

Child in critical condition at Shands Jacksonville Medical Center

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – An 18-month-old girl is in critical condition after being pulled from a retention pond Monday night, authorities say.

The pond is near the child's home on Boddens Road in the Dinsmore area, police said.

Sgt. Jay Farhat, of the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office, told Channel 4 Monday night that police received a call from a local family around 5:30 p.m. in regards to a missing child.

Layla Granno was found shortly after police arrived and transported to Shands Jacksonville Medical Center.

Channel 4 spoke with a man at the scene who said he pulled the girl out of the water and gave her CPR.

The neighbor said he saw the toddler's mother pacing in the backyard around 5:30 p.m. The mother told him she couldn't find the child.

He said he helped the woman look for her daughter. He said when they found her, she looked like a plastic bag in the water.

The girl was floating face up in the pond, according to the neighbor. The man said he pulled the baby out and performed CPR.

According to the neighbor, the baby had a heartbeat when the ambulance arrived.

"We just ask for love and prayers for this family because they just moved in and this is such a tragedy," said one neighbor named Susan. "We ask for everybody they send their love and prayers so this little angel will be alright."

Police are continuing to investigate.
