JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office has announced the name of the man they say opened fire on an officer Wednesday afternoon on the Westside.
The man has been identified as 33-year-old Donald Lee Goins, and according to JSO, he has an extensive arrest history.
Goins is now under arrest on charges of attempted murder of a police officer, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and domestic battery.
Goins was booked into jail shortly before midnight and is scheduled to appear in court at 1 p.m. Thursday.
Undersheriff Dwain Senterfitt said Goins suddenly opened fire on Officer Andrew Benson shortly after 5:35 p.m. Wednesday in a Lackawanna neighborhood after Benson pulled him over because he wasn't wearing a seat belt.
Benson was shot in the upper right arm, but he managed to move back into his car and returned fire.
According to Senterfitt, Goins also had help trying to get away from the scene.
"He was arrested in the Springfield area," Senterfitt said. "Somebody gave him a ride over there, so if people know who gave him a ride, if somebody gave him a ride, we'd be interested in talking to them."
Earlier, Senterfitt also talked about how dangerous it is for officers, who put their lives on the line every day.
"It happens every day on the seemingly most minor calls that we work," he said. "And that's the key is that we don't know what we're walking into. Bad things can still happen as we can see right here. You know, a few inches another way and this scenario is completely different; instead of the upper arm, it could've been in the head."
Senterfitt said Wednesday night he thought Benson -- who's been with JSO for five years -- had already been released from the hospital. He also said detectives will continue working on the case through the night.
"We don't know yet what his motivation was. He was a convicted felon. He was in possession of a firearm which is against the law, it's a felony. He did have a warrant for a misdemeanor," said Senterfitt.
According to Goins' record from the Department of Corrections, he's a convicted drug dealer. The two drug offenses happened in 2000 and 2006. Records show he spent over a year in jail for each case. Goins was also sentenced in 2010 for battery and he spent another year in jail.
