LAKE BUTLER, Fla. - A 59-year-old man is dead after a single-vehicle crash in Union County on Saturday night.
Florida Highway Patrol says Malcolm H. Crews, of Lake Butler, was driving a 2007 Chevy Silverado north on Northwest County Road 241.
Troopers say for unknown reasons the pickup truck traveled into the southbound lane and veered onto the southbound shoulders. According to investigators the left side of the pickup truck struck a mailbox and kept going on the southbound shoulder.
Then troopers say the truck became airborne, traveling across a deep culvert before the left side of the truck hit two support poles from a private fence. According to investigators, the truck overturned multiple times before coming to a final rest on its right side facing west.
Investigators say Crews was ejected from the truck and died at the scene. Troopers say he was not wearing a seat belt. A passenger, 51-year-old James A. Shaw, also of Lake Butler, was wearing a seat belt and was taken to UF Health in Gainesville with serious injuries.
It has not been determined if alcohol was a factor in this crash.
