Lake County School Board member wants teachers to carry guns

Plan comes in wake of mass shooting in Connecticut

TAVARES, Fla. – A Lake County School Board member wants to arm teachers with guns -- and have the school district pay for it.

Bill Mathias says he emailed the school superintendent about the idea and wants to talk about the plan at a workshop next week.

Under the plan, teachers would be trained by the Lake County Sheriff's Office and would become auxiliary deputies.

Mathias says teachers could carry guns around or keep them in storage safes at their respective schools.

News about  the plan came on the same day thousands of students returned to armed deputies in schools across Central Florida.

The increased security comes in the wake of last month's school shooting in Newtown, Conn., where 20 elementary students and six administrators were shot and killed.
