Longtime educator dies on New Years Day

Billy Parker spent 30 years as teacher, principal, school board member

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Wendell "Billy" Parker, a University of Florida quarterback who went into education, became a high school principal, then served multiple terms on the Duval County School Board has died Wednesday at age 88.

Parker graduated from Lee High School before attending UF.  He was a teacher and coach in Duval County schools before serving as principal of Forrest and Wolfson high schools.  He became director of secondary schools and assistant superintendent before retiring.

He was first elected to the School Board in 1980 and twice served as chairman before being forced out by term limits.

A memorial service for Parker will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Lake Shore Baptist Church, 2363 Blanding Boulevard.
