Man charged in Barrios killing still not competent

George Edenfield is found not competent to stand trial.

BRUNSWICK, Ga. – A man charged in the 2007 killing of 6-year-old Christopher Barrios in Glynn County is still not competent to stand trial.

George Edenfield was declared not competent for prosecution in 2010. There was a follow-up evaluation in February, and the psychologist who did it concluded Edenfield "is not competent to stand trial, that he is not competent of being restored in the foreseeable future, and that he meets the criteria for inpatient civil commitment."

The trial judge has appointed another psychologist to do an independent evaluation. There's a hearing in the case Thursday.

Edenfield, his father, David, and mother, Peggy, were all charged in the kidnapping, sexual assault and murder of Barrios.

David Edenfield was the only one tried. He was convicted and sentenced to death. His lawyer has filed a motion for a new trial.

Peggy Edenfield pleaded guilty to lesser charges and was sentenced to 60 years in prison.
