JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A Jacksonville man was convicted Thursday afternoon of first-degree murder and armed robbery in the killing of a hotel employee last year.

In April 2011, Douglas Haynes killed Vasudevbhal Barot at the Quality Inn off Dix Ellis Trail in Baymeadows. Barot worked and lived at the hotel.

Haynes, along with another co-defendant, Craig Roback, went to Barot's hotel room, where they tied him up and then beat him, prosecutors said.

They said the murder was the result of a plan to rob Barot of his money.

Haynes is one of five people arrested in the case. Roback was convicted in May of the same charges. He will be sentenced next week.

Haynes' sentencing date will be set Aug. 13.

The other three co-defendants -- Mindy Lethco, Beau Graham and Jennifer Henn -- pleaded guilty to charges of second-degree murder and armed robbery.
