JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - A man is fighting for his life after being pulled from a retention pond Monday evening at the Palms At Beach Boulevard Apartments, about a mile east of Interstate 295.

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office say a group of men were drinking around dinnertime when two of them bet each who could swim across the retention pond in the complex fastest.

While they were racing, the victim went under the water.  Two others pulled him out and performed CPR until rescue personnel arrived and took him to the emergency room at Mayo Clinic.

Officials say the likelihood of him surviving is low.  His name was not released.
