Man missing after being swept out to sea by rip current off Melbourne Beach

Coast Guard continues to search for missing swimmer

MELBOURNE BEACH, Fla. – Rescue crews are searching for a man who they say got caught in a rip current Sunday around 6 p.m. at Coconut Point Park in Melbourne Beach.

A Brevard County deputy and firefighter dove in the water in an attempt to rescue the man but were unable to.

Brevard County Ocean Rescue lifeguards then did a grid search but were unable to locate the man before.

A Brevard County helicopter, along with Florida Fish and Wildlife and Coast Guard jet skis and boats, were also out in search of the man, who officials said remains missing.

The Coast Guard has now taken over the investigation.

Officials said three other people that got caught in the rip current with the man were able to get out of the water.

No other information was immediately released.
