JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A 60-year-old Jacksonville man was sentenced Friday afternoon to life in prison, with a 15-year minimum mandatory as a habitual violent felony offender, on each of the three counts he was convicted of in March.

Wilson Holmes was found guilty of kidnapping and two counts of sexual battery. The sentences run concurrently.

In January 1999, Holmes attacked the victim as she was leaving the post office. Holmes dragged the woman back inside the building and repeatedly beat and choked her.

The woman attempted to fight back by biting Holmes but lost consciousness during the attack. Holmes then raped the woman before fleeing the scene.

During a follow-up investigation in 2010, DNA samples collected from the woman's teeth during the initial investigation were resubmitted for processing. It was found that Holmes' DNA matched the DNA recovered from the victim after the incident.

Holmes was previously convicted of murder in Georgia. He was released early on parole after being sentenced to life in prison.
