Military device found on Westside

Police safely disposed piece of military grade ordinance or explosive device

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Several families were evacuated from an area on the Westside Monday night after police found what appeared to be a piece of military grade ordinance or explosive device, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

At 8:29 p.m., a concerned citizen called JSO in reference to recovering a found firearm at 120 North Cahoon Road, just north of West Beaver Street.

Officers responded to the scene, and while safely recovering the firearm, observed what appeared to be a piece of military grade ordnance, or an explosive device.

The officer made the appropriate notifications, and in the interests of public safety, an evacuation of the immediate area surrounding the house was conducted, according to JSO.

Members of the JSO Bomb Unit responded to the scene and safely disposed of the device.

There was no indication to believe there was any criminal activity involved in the incident, but members of the JSO Intelligence Unit were called to the scene to investigate.

There were no injuries associated with the incident, according to JSO.
