BRUNSWICK, Ga. - A Georgia woman charged in connection with the March slaying of a baby in Brunswick says she wants to be tried separately from her son, who is charged with shooting the child during a robbery attempt.
The Brunswick News reports that Karimah Elkins' attorney has filed a court motion arguing jurors would have trouble distinguishing between five different defendants charged in the case.
Police say Elkins and another family member tried to get rid of the gun that her son, 18-year-old De'Marquise Elkins (pictured, right), used to shoot 13-month-old Antonio Santiago in the face.
Police say the boy was shot after the teenager and an accomplice, 15-year-old Dominique Lang, tried to rob the child's mother.
A judge has moved De'Marquise Elkins' trial to Marietta, just northwest of Atlanta. It's scheduled to start Aug. 19.
