No 'provable criminal activity' for Clay County superintendent

CLAY COUNTY, Fla. – The State Attorney's Office says there was no "provable criminal activity" in regards to Clay County Schools Superintendent Charles Van Zant spending school funds without the school board's authority.

Van Zant put down $2,000 in school funds and used the school district's 25 percent discount to book the Thrasher-Horne Center for the Arts for the American Exceptionalism Conference this year.

After school board members raised concerns about the expenditure, the money was refunded.

Van Zant said he was within his authority to spend that amount without school board approval, but the board then asked for an investigation by the State Attorney's Office and the Florida Ethics Commission.

The State Attorney's Office has now referred the matter to the Ethics Commission.
