Phone scammer impersonating Brunswick police, FBI

BRUNSWICK, Ga. – Police are investigating after getting work that someone is calling citizens in the area, telling them there's a warrant for their arrest for not showing up in court for a speeding citation.

The caller identifies himself as Brunswick Police Lt. Chambers and goes on to say they can avoid arrest by paying a $364 fee by credit or debit card.

A citizen who received the call on Monday recognized it as a possible scam, did not give out credit card information to the suspect and called police.

There have also been recent reports of persons claiming to be FBI agents making similar claims, asking for credit/debit card information to avoid jail time.

Brunswick police remind citizens to not give out bank account, credit or debit card information to anyone over the phone. Anyone receiving such calls is asked to report them to police.
