Police ID pedestrian killed on Emerson Expressway

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Police on Thursday identified the pedestrian killed early Monday morning while crossing Emerson Expressway near the Beach Boulevard.

According to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office, 51-year-old Stephen Hancock was struck by a northbound car in the 4500 block of Emerson Expressway about 6:30 a.m.  Police say the driver, who they did not name, saw the man crossing the highway, braked and veered to the right, but failed to avoid hitting Hancock.

The victim was transported to Shands Jacksonville Medical Center, where he died of his injuries.

Police say the driver suffered minor injuries.

According to police, the car was driving the speed limit before dawn and the area has no streetlights or crosswalks.

JSO traffic homicide detectives continue investigating the accident.
