VALDOSTA, Ga. - The body of a teenager has been exhumed after his relatives requested a second autopsy be to be done on him.
In January, 17-year-old Kendrick Johnson was found dead in an upright roll of gym mats at Lowndes High School in Valdosta. Officials have said the teen was trying to retrieve a pair of shoes that had gotten stuck inside the mats and died of positional asphyxia after hanging upside down for an extended time period.
The teen's family believes foul play factored into his death and has ordered an independent autopsy on his body. Valdosta Police Chief Brian Childress told The Valdosta Daily Times Johnson's family exhumed his remains Friday and has 30 days to return him to the cemetery.
