Sailboat strikes Buckman Bridge

FDOT says bridge not damaged

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A 38-foot sailboat struck the Buckman Bridge Thursday afternoon, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.

The sailboat, named Interceptor, broke free from its mooring at Mulberry Cove Marina aboard NAS Jacksonville before the vessel struck a bridge fender and the mast struck the concrete beneath the roadway.

No one was on the sailboat during the accident and there are no reports of injuries or pollution. The bridge was not damaged, according to the Florida Department of Transportation.

The Interceptor was last reported wedged underneath the bridge outside of the navigational channel.

Coast Guard Sector Jacksonville in Atlantic Beach notified FDOT and coordinated with the marina owner, who intends to recover the vessel.

The incident comes a day after a sailboat and a houseboat struck the Bridge of Lions in St. Augustine because of heavy winds.
