A deputy said he was on routine patrol in the 300 block of State Road 16 shortly after midnight. Deputy Joseph Romer said he observed a gas tank below a GMC rental truck where the fuel line had been cut, causing fuel to fill the portable tank.

Romer said he was aware of previous burglaries to the business where gas was removed from other vehicles recently. The deputy walked around in the area, however, did not see anyone and drove off to survey the area at a distance.

As Romer drove off, he said he observed two gas containers on the rear floorboard of the vehicle and detected a strong odor of fuel from the vehicle.

The St. Johns County Sheriff's Office says Smallwood admitted to the theft of gasoline from six vehicles on two occasions at the business. A computer check revealed the outstanding warrants on Smallwood as well, and he was then booked into jail.
