St. Johns officer, 41-year-old mom injured in wreck

PUTNAM COUNTY, Fla. – An officer with the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office and a 41-year-old Palatka woman suffered serious injuries in a two-car wreck at the intersection of State Road 207 and County Road 207A in Putnam County.

According to the police report, Michele Egeland was driving with her two children, ages 9 and 7, in a Plymouth Neon. Egeland was exiting CR 207A and pulled eastward across SR 207 in front of officer Christopher Acosta, 51, who was driving in an unmarked Chevy Tahoe.

According to the report, Acosta swerved to avoid a t-bone and the front right side of the Tahoe struck the front left side of the Neon. Egeland's car spun toward the southbound shoulder, and the Tahoe slid to a stop after careening off the road south of the intersection.

Both southbound lanes were closes for more than an hour.

Egeland was cited for failing to yield at a stop intersection and driving on a suspended license. The children were not injured.
