Suspect killed after firing at Columbia Co. deputies

LAKE CITY, Fla. – The Columbia County Sheriff's Office says a  59-year-old man who came out of a house and fired a shotgun at narcotics detectives just before midnight was shot and killed by deputies.

A drug task force was trying to make contact with a man at a home on N.W. Bronco Terrace near Lake Jeffery Road when Alberto Valdes came out with a weapon. Deputies say he didn't obey commands to drop the gun, instead firing a shot.  Several deputies returned fire, killing the man.

Valdes was pronounced dead at the scene.  An autopsy will be conducted by the medical examiner to confirm his identity and cause of death.

No deputies were injured in the incident.  They were placed on paid administrative leave while the shooting is investigated by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, which is standard protocol in officer shootings.
