Police say officers responding to reports of a gunshot fired at the apartment complex in the 700 block of Lincoln Court North found Jackson dead.

Investigators learned Jackson had been in an altercation with several people near the playground area of the apartments that afternoon. When Jackson left the area, he was followed into the courtyard where one of his pursuers pulled a handgun. Detectives were told Jackson produced his own gun and continued to try to leave.

Police say Thornton came up behind the Jackson and shot him in his head, killing him instantly.

While police currently have a warrant charging Thornton with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, they say a murder warrant is pending.

Anyone with any information about the whereabouts of Thornton is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 866-845-TIPS.
