MAYPORT, Fla. – What was once easy for Kia Watson, now isn't.
The 15-year-old from Mayport is struggling to walk more than a month after a crash that could have claimed her life.
"I can't walk to school with friends anymore, I can't go to certain places, and I can't run anymore," Watson said.
She said she and her friend were just crossing the street, leaving a Walgreens at Mayport Road and Assisi Lane and headed home when a car ran a red light and hit her near the median. She landed on the hood of a car going the other way.
Watson only remembers seeing headlights before she blacked out.
"I was on the ground and a lady was sitting in front of me, and she was saying, 'Hold on, sit still. I called the ambulance for you,'" Watson said. "And then I went back to sleep."
"She was just screaming and crying, and I saw her leg just open," said Icess Reeves, Watson's mother. "There was nothing I could do but break down."
Investigators with the Florida Highway Patrol said the driver who ran the red light and hit Watson left the scene and hasn't been found. Detectives said Watson had the right of way and didn't do anything wrong.
Now her mother is on a mission to find that driver.
"Even if you don't have a license or were drunk, at least make sure they're OK," Reeves said. "But you hit her and left."
Reeves said she's taking the case into her own hands because she doesn't think investigators are doing enough.
"They were like, 'Well, there are no cameras and there's nothing we can do,'" Reeves said. "And I don't see how there's nothing you can do."
FHP said it's doing what it can and will follow all leads and go through any avenue it can to solve this case.
The car is described as dark blue or black and has a driver's side mirror missing.
