PONTE VEDRA, Fla. – A hospital room will likely be home for the next several days for a Ponte Vedra teen who was airlifted after a crash near his home Sunday night.
Investigators said 19-year-old Garrett Moore lost control of his 2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse around a curve on North Cove Drive and slammed into a group of trees.
Moore's condition was upgraded Monday from critical to serious but stable.
St. Johns County deputies believe Moore was speeding at the time of the crash.
"Preliminarily, our traffic homicide investigators are saying that the evidence suggests that speed was definitely a factor in this crash," Sgt. Catherine Payne said. "If there are other factors, those will be determined in the investigation."
The crash was reported just after 8 p.m. Sunday on North Cove and Hammock Cove drives, which is a stone's throw away from where Moore's parents live.
After he was flown to UF Health Jacksonville, Channel 4 posted the story on Twitter, which led to a series of retweets and messages of health and prayer from those who know the 19-year-old.
Channel 4 reached out to those friends on Facebook for comment on this story tonight but hasn't heard back from anyone.
According to Moore's Facebook page, he's living in Tallahassee, attending Florida State University.
It's still unclear if Moore was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash or if anything else could have contributed to him losing control.
Investigators said their report should be complete within the next week or so.
