In his statement, O'Neill thanked President Obama, U.S. Attorney General Holder, Sens. Nelson and Rubio, and former Sens. Martinez and LeMieux for giving him the opportunity to serve.

"I appreciate the confidence which they exhibited in me and I hope and trust that I, and this office, have lived up to their expectations," O'Neill said.

The Middle District runs from northeast Florida southwest across the state to the Fort Myers/Naples/Sarasota area and has the second largest population of all U.S. Attorney districts in the country.

O'Neill took office in October 2010, becoming the 20th top federal prosecutor for the region.

He said he made his resignation effective in the summer "to ensure an orderly transition for this office and for my successor."
