MAYPORT, Fla. – Family and friends of 19-year-old Tyler Self, who was killed early Saturday morning by an SUV, gathered in Mayport Monday night.
The SUV that hit Self was driven by a 22-year-old stopped when it struck a tree.
Adorned in Gator colors -- Self's favorite team -- the people who knew and loved Self packed the site along Mayport Road where he was killed. The Fletcher High grad was walking to a bus stop heading for work when he was struck.
"I'm very sad, very sad," said Self's friend Dee Edgmon. "He was fine young man and he didn't deserve it."
"It's terrible," said friend of Self's, James Elphingstone. "I don't know what all went down here, but this kid was a real standup guy, and getting back on his feet. Just sad."
Self's mom was overcome with grief as she was surrounded by friends.
"They're all here because they loved Tyler, really good kid," said Self's friend Erik Falk. "He was her shining light in her eyes. That's what helped her go everyday.
Self's brother John says they'll just do the best they can to get through this.
"I love him. Sucks that I'm not going to be able to talk to him again," John said. "One thing comes around, you pick yourself up and move on."
A lot of people in the community want to know what will be done to the driver. The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating, but the group who gathered at the vigil feels the driver should get more than a slap on the wrist.
"I just saw him last week and I don't think it's right for the person to have just walked away with just a ticket," Falk said.
Charges are pending against the 22-year-old driver, Christopher Duboulay. The FHP said it's not clear why he veered off the road.
