Woman, 33, dies in crash after van hits mailbox, trees

Man in critical condition after Greenland Road crash

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A 33-year-old woman died on Greenland Road on Monday morning when her minivan struck a concrete mailbox and tree, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

Police responded to the crash scene near Greenland Pines Elementary just before 8 a.m.

Police said Shai Kuruvilla was driving west in the 5000 block of Greenland Road when the van traveled off the south side of the roadway and struck a brick mailbox and two trees.

Police said Kuruvilla sustained head injuries. She and a man were taken to Shands Jacksonville Medical Center, where she died. The 32-year-old man was in critical condition. His name was not released.

The crash remains under investigation. It's unknown why Kuruvilla lost control.

Greenland Road near the school reopened just before noon.
