Woman, 51, dies in I-10 crash that closes highway

COLUMBIA COUNTY, Fla. – A 51-year-old Lake City woman was killed in a crash with a tractor-trailer Wednesday morning on Interstate 10, west of U.S. Highway 41, a crash that closed eastbound lanes for nearly seven hours, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

State troopers said Christina Fields was heading westbound on I-10 in the left lane about 8:30 a.m. when her car went off the roadway, across the median and into the path of the big rig heading east.

Fields died at the scene. James Rose, 52, of Conyers, Ga., was taken to a hospital with minor injuries and later released.

Eastbound traffic was being detoured onto southbound Interstate 75. Motorists can then exit onto eastbound U.S. 90 and travel northbound on U.S. 41 or 441 and return to I-10.

For those traveling northbound on I-75, they will be detoured to County Road 136 in Suwannee County then south on U.S. 41 back to I-10.

Motorists are urged to avoid the area and seek an alternate route.

Troopers were investigating the crash.
