Woman killed on U.S. 1 in Nassau County

CALLAHAN, Fla. – The Florida Highway Patrol is looking for a tractor-trailer that struck and killed a 26-year-old woman Sunday night who was standing next to a disabled car on U.S 1 north of Callahan.

According to the FHP, Brittany Hoatlin, of Glen St. Mary, was struck about 8:30 p.m. as she was in the outside travel lane inspecting damage to the vehicle that had been in a crash minutes earlier.

Troopers were told the southbound big rig swerved to avoid the wrecked vehicle, but struck Hoatlin.  Witnesses said the tractor-trailer stopped several hundred feet away and the driver got out and started walking toward the crash scene, then turned, got back in the cab and drove away.

The FHP report said Hoatlin was standing in the road illegally and that stretch of the highway has no lighting.

Troopers continue to search for the tractor-trailer and its driver. Anyone with information that could help locate the big rig is asked to call the FHP's Jacksonville Regional Communications Center at 904-359-6572.
