Worker who fell from Cecil Commerce hangar dies

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Firefighters say a worker who fell from the roof of a hangar under construction on Simpson Way at Cecil Commerce Center about 3:30 p.m. Friday afternoon has died.

Sheriff's Office homicide detectives said the victim, 26-year-old Jose Lopez, was a resident of Axton, Virginia, and had been in town since May 12 for this construction project. He worked for IMC Steel Erectors.

Investigators said Lopez was wearing a safety harness, but he untethered to move from one rafter to another and fell before he reconnected.

"He was switching from one rafter to another. He untethered one rafter and step to another. Then the wind came up or whatever and he fell. He died at the scene on his back. It was about 100 hundred 125 feet roughly," Jacksonville Sheriff's Office Sgt. Dan Janson.

He fell approximately 120 feet and died on impact, detectives said. His brother was working with him at the time of his fall.

Channel 4 has a crew at the scene gathering more information. This article will be updated as more information becomes available.
