Downpour prompts flooding in Riverside, downtown

Heavy rain makes driving difficult; flood advisory in effect until mid-afternoon

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Drivers and walkers had a difficult time getting around the streets in the Riverside neighborhood Sunday after heavy rain in a short amount of time caused some flash floods.

The National Weather Service  issued an urban and small stream flood advisory for minor flooding of poor drainage areas in. central Duval County until 3 p.m. Sunday after Doppler radar indicated heavy rain of 1 to 1.5 inches near downtown Jacksonville.  Additional rainfall amounts of around 1 inch are possible in the advisory area.

Channel 4 meteorologist Rebecca Barry says high pressure will weaken as low pressure organizes over the Gulf of Mexico. Rain is expected in the area through Monday and will become more widespread across northeast Florida before conditions improve on Tuesday.

A cool front will arrive later in the week.
