Heckscher was traveling southbound in a 2001 Toyota Tundra pickup truck just before midnight July 8, deputies said. They said he was in the right lane of State Road A1A South passing Florida Avenue when he struck a pedestrian, identified as 53-year-old Robert Louk, of St. Augustine Beach.

Deputies said Heckscher then fled the scene, but witnesses were able to give a description of his vehicle to deputies.

Investigators said they were able to locate the vehicle at Heckscher's Trade Wind Lane home, and a search warrant was obtained. Evidence collected from the vehicle and at the scene identified Heckscher as the driver, deputies said.

An arrest warrant was obtained and Heckscher turned himself in at the St. Johns County jail at 8:30 p.m. Thursday. He was released two hours later after posting $20,000 bond.
