In April 2013, Wright surrendered to Jacksonville Sheriff's Officers stating that he had hurt someone and taken the victim's car. Officers responded to the victim's home and discovered 76-year-old John Henry Bowser dead in the kitchen of his home.

Bowser was a local pastor and founder of The Glorious Church of the Lord in downtown Jacksonville. The victim had been helping Wright get back on his feet after he was released from prison.

The investigation revealed that Wright went to the victim's home to get money to buy drugs. When Bowser refused to give him the money, Wright attacked the victim and beat him to death with a hammer. Wright then stole money and the victim's car and fled the scene.
