GAINESVILLE, Fla. -

The Gainesville Police Department is asking for the public's help in finding a man wanted on a murder charge.

Investigators said they have some unverified information that 26-year-old Larry Whitehead Jr. may have fled to the Miami area.

Just after 6 a.m. July 14, police received multiple 911 calls reporting a person shot in the area of Southern Pines Apartments in the 4100 block of Southwest 17th Place.

Officers found 37-year-old Samuel Hamilton dead in an apartment of an apparent gunshot wound to his head.

Police said that according to multiple witnesses, Whitehead forced his way into the apartment, where he and Hamilton got into a verbal altercation that ultimately resulted in Whitehead producing a handgun and shooting and killing Hamilton. Police said Whitehead fled the area on foot.

Multiple officers, including K9s, searched the area, but Whitehead was not found, leading police to believe he left the area in a vehicle.

Whitehead is described as a black man, 6 feet tall and 160 pounds. He has an extensive criminal history and should be considered armed and extremely dangerous.

If you see Whitehead, call 911 immediately and report his location, clothing description and direction of travel. If you have any information on his whereabouts, call Detective Martin Honeycutt at 352-393-7615 or manke an anonymous tip by texting keyword "GPDFL" plus your tip to 274637 (CRIMES).

Tips that lead to an arrest and prosecution may be eligible for a cash reward. The gun used in the killing has not been recovered, and any information that leads investigators to finding it may be eligible for a gun bounty reward of up to $1,000.
