GREEN COVE SPRINGS, Fla. – A 61-year-old Clay County man was convicted Thursday of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer.

In May 2013, deputies went to Thomas Adams' home to assist the Department of Children and Families in removing a 5-year-old boy from the home.

When Adams saw the deputies, he grabbed his gun before opening the door. Adams told the deputies that they were not going to take the child, and then pulled his gun out from behind his back and pointed it at one of the deputies.

The deputies were able to disarm and detain Adams before anyone was hurt.

Adams now faces up to 15 years in prison, with a three-year minimum mandatory. He will be sentenced Oct. 8.
