Man Charged In Crash Has Long Record

38-Year-Old Accused Of Causing Crash Friday That Killed 6 People

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A 38-year-old man accused of causing a crash Friday that killed six people, including four children, has an extensive criminal history and dozens of driving record infractions.

Pedro Alcazar is charged with six counts of vehicular homicide after troopers said his car sideswiped the car carrying the family. Troopers said witnesses saw Alcazar driving at a high rate of speed and weaving in and out of traffic before clipping the family's car. The car was sent into the median, where it was hit by a pickup truck trying to avoid a cloud of dust kicked up by the wreck.

Alcazar made his first appearance before a judge Saturday morning, just hours after the fatal crash.

In 2007, Alcazar was arrested on domestic battery charges after police said he head-butted his girlfriend's father in a dispute over money. Less than a month later, his girlfriend filed a complaint after she said Alcazar became violent in a fight.

In 2008, Alcazar was arrested on charges of disorderly intoxication. And later that year, he was arrested on drug possession charges.

Since 1991, when it comes to Alcazar's driving record, his infractions include the following: driving a vehicle in unsafe condition, failure to obey traffic signs, failure to observe a stop sign, passenger holding an open container, operating without insurance, failing to pay traffic fines, and driving with a suspended license.

It's hard to determine when Alcazar last held a valid driver's license. Assistant state attorney Wes White said Alcazar's license was suspended because he failed to pay child support. White saw firsthand the aftermath of Friday's fatal accident.

"It was a horrific scene," he said. "It was incredibly sad, and it's one I don't want to see again."

The victims of the crash were identified Saturday as Brenda Mitchell Edwards, 57, of Jacksonville; her daughter Melissa L. Mitchell, 39, of Lawrenceville, Ga.; Mitchell's three children, Miya Mitchell, 11, and twins Christian and Keyshawn Perry, both 4; and Edward's granddaughter Dhanja Mitchell, 16, of Jacksonville.

Monique Mitchell, who lost her daughter, mother, sister, niece and twin nephews, talked Monday about the tragedy.

"I'm not angry because he is a person, too, and he will make mistakes," Mitchell said. "But I'm hurt, and I want to follow this up to the fullest extent of the law and make sure that if he was at fault he be properly punished."

Alcazar was being held in the Nassau County Jail on $300,012 bail.

FHP said alcohol didn't appear to be a factor, but the accident was still under investigation.

The family said it hopes to hold a service for all of the victims on Saturday. If you would like to help with the costs for the funerals, the family has set up a VyStar account. The account number is 702814864.
