Police Say Victim Shot During Armed Robbery, Died At Hospital

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Police said Curtis Ammons Jr. and a man still on the run shot a 60-year-old man during a robbery attempt at the victim's apartment last month.

Ammons, 18, was arrested on charges of murder and armed robbery, and his 37-year-old father, Curtis Ammons Sr. was charged with accessory after the fact.

Detectives said two young men were seen leaving the apartment in the 2400 block of North Myrtle Avenue just after 10 p.m. on Feb. 20. The victim, Eddie Chaplin, was taken to a hospital, where he died.

Ammons Jr. was arrested March 8 by members of the U.S. Marshals Service. His father was arrested on Thursday.

Police said they are still looking for Elton Wilson in connection with the robbery and homicide. Officers said he should be considered armed and dangerous.

According to the arrest report, police obtained a recorded conversation in which Ammons Sr. told his son, "It broke me down when I heard (the police) got that gun. Man, I told y'all to get rid of that...." The report does on to say that Ammons Sr. advised Wilson to leave town.
