Man dies in Paxon-area crash, JSO says

Commonwealth Avenue lanes close near Paxon Revival Center Church

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A man is dead after a crash Friday night in the Paxon area, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

Commonwealth Avenue was closed down in both directions near the Paxon Revival Center Church.

JSO and Fire Rescue were called to the scene of the crash. Authorities said the driver, 57-year-old Vaughn Stamper, hit a power pole in front of the church, and the car flipped and crashed into the church sign.

Stamper was taken to UF Health Jacksonville and died later at the hospital.

There's no word yet on what caused the crash.

Traffic homicide authorities are investigating.
