Man dies, other injured in double shooting

20-year-old killed in altercation on Alma Avenue in Lake City

LAKE CITY, Fla. – The Lake City Police Department is investigating a double shooting Thursday morning that left one man dead and another flown to the trauma center at UF Health Gainesville.

Police officers responded to Shands Lakeshore Hospital just before 2 a.m. Thursday, where the two victims, Elijah Dunning, 48, and Christopher McConnell, 20, were already receiving emergency medical treatment.

McConnell was pronounced dead shortly after. Dunning was flown to Gainesville.

The investigation revealed an altercation occurred in front of 742 NW Alma Ave. around 1:45 a.m. According to statements, Dunning and McConnell were inside a vehicle at that address. An unknown person approached the vehicle and fired several shots into it.

Dunning drove from the scene to Lakeshore Hospital. Medical staff removed the two men from the vehicle.

Investigators determined the suspect fled on food and K9 tracking teams from the Florida Department of Corrections and Florida Fish and Wildlife responded, but could not find the shooter.

Several agencies are investigating the double shooting, including LCPD, Columbia County Sheriff's Office, Florida Department of Law Enforcement and the state attorney's office.
