ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -

Officials say police fatally shot a man Friday evening at a St. Petersburg veterans hospital.

A Bay Pines VA Medical Center spokesman says a man walked into the emergency room and became uncooperative. The man reportedly began waving a knife around, which prompted Veterans Affairs police officers to shoot him. The man was wounded and later died.

The man wasn't immediately identified, and it was unclear how many officers fired on him.

The hospital spokesman says the emergency room was evacuated out of an abundance of caution.
