Man killed waiting for tow truck remembered

Jacob Green, Robert Fisher killed on exit ramp to Monument Road

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Jacob Green, 20, and Robert Fisher, 29, were killed as they stood on the exit ramp near Monument Road and 295 waiting for Green's car to be towed.

Green's mother said Fisher stopped to help Green. She said she'll never be able to thank Fisher's family enough for the kindness he showed toward her son that night.

Green's parents said they miss their son so much and right now they said it doesn't feel real.

A lot of tears and a lot of hugs are what's getting Green's mother, Stephanie Whitehead, through what she calls the worst time of her life.

"I still feel numb, like I'm in a fog, and I just want to know he's in heaven and that he's OK," said Whitehead. "I have a lot of questions -- why, why now? Why so young, you know? So I think that I'll feel better when I know more because we know so little right now. It still just seems like a dream and I just haven't woken up yet."

The accident happened early Friday morning near Monument Road and 295. Whitehead said her son lost control of his car and was on the side of the road. She said he texted a friend to let her know he was OK and that someone had stopped to help him.

Fisher called AAA for Green and waited with him while the tow truck arrived. Shortly after, a Dodge Neon slammed into at least one of the cars on the side of the road, as well as the people standing outside. Green and Fisher died.

Whitehead said she can't thank Fisher's family enough for what he did.

"We're so grateful for that. We're so grateful for Robert and I really wanted his family to know that we think God sent him as an angel to look over Jacob. And I want his family to know that I'm forever indebted and grateful to them," Whitehead said.

Whitehead and her fiance, Darrell Glover, were supposed to say "I do" next weekend, but instead they're panning a funeral for Green. She hasn't seen him since the accident happened.

"I think they'll let us see him on Tuesday. That's what we've gathered so far, is that we'll see him on Tuesday. Maybe it'll be a little more real then," said Whitehead. "He was full of life. Everything that Robert probably saw that, because who stops at 1 o'clock in the morning? He probably knew Jacob was a good person and wanted to help him."

Whitehead said she'd like to get in touch with Fisher's family so that she can thank them in person. Family members said they plan on having a funeral Friday, but details are still being worked out.

The family has set up an account to pay for funeral expenses.
